CHOOSE THE SHAPE BEFORE BOOKING

Which pace fits your pilgrimage?

9 days · 8 nights
The signature route: 4 Rome nights, 3 Assisi nights, 1 final Rome night. Arrival, transfers and departure are part of those nine days.
10 days · 9 nights
Add a Rome night for the Vatican Museums. Reserve the museum separately; it is a different visit from Saint Peter’s Basilica.
11 days · 10 nights
More breathing room in Rome and Assisi. Extra days help spread visits; they do not remove hills, stairs or security queues.

Choose below, then use the matching budget and checklist links. Confirm worship, reserved visits and both station-to-accommodation connections before paying for fixed bookings. The packet and this route are planning frameworks, not reservations.

SHAPE THE JOURNEY

A few places.
Enough time for them.

9 days · 8 nights: 4 Rome, 3 Assisi, 1 final Rome.

These are editorial planning frameworks, not tours or reservations. Move visits around confirmed worship, closures and transport. International travel may extend the trip. The gentler version adds time; it does not guarantee step-free access.

  1. 01

    OVERNIGHT / Rome

    Arrive in Rome

Settle in, eat and rest. A nearby church is optional if energy allows.

Leave room: Keep the day free of timed visits.

  2. 02

    OVERNIGHT / Rome

    Begin at Saint Peter’s

Make the basilica the main appointment, with time for security and prayer.

Leave room: Lunch nearby; leave the afternoon open. The dome is optional.

  3. 03

    OVERNIGHT / Rome

    Mary Major, then the Lateran

Begin with the Marian basilica, then continue to Rome’s cathedral after lunch.

Leave room: Use transport between places; omit optional museums and the Scala Sancta if tired.

  4. 04

    OVERNIGHT / Rome

    Give Saint Paul a morning

Travel south to the apostle’s basilica. Choose the cloister only if it interests you.

Leave room: Protect the afternoon for rest, a confirmed Mass or a return visit.

  5. 05

    OVERNIGHT / Assisi

    Transfer to Assisi

Confirm the rail journey for your date, then the station-to-town connection. Check in before a short orientation.

Leave room: Treat the transfer as the main task; avoid an essential liturgy just after arrival.

  6. 06

    OVERNIGHT / Assisi

    Francis and Clare

Begin at Saint Francis’s tomb and churches. Visit Saint Clare after lunch and rest, around her basilica’s opening hours.

Leave room: Choose one basilica if energy is limited; return to the other on an extra day.

  7. 07

    OVERNIGHT / Assisi

A chosen shrine, then the valley

Choose the Spoliation and Saint Carlo Acutis, or San Damiano. Give the afternoon to the Porziuncola in Santa Maria degli Angeli.

Leave room: Use transport where needed. Omit the morning addition to keep this day shorter.

  8. 08

    OVERNIGHT / Rome

    Return to Rome

Check the connection to Assisi station and the onward train. Choose the final night’s address around your actual departure.

Leave room: Keep a buffer; do not pair the transfer with a must-see timed attraction.

  9. 09

    DEPARTURE DAY

    Depart with margin

Follow the advice of your airline or onward transport provider for reaching check-in or the platform.

Leave room: International travel can add time beyond this itinerary.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Four decisions that hold the plan together.

01

Choose the anchor

Fit a papal audience into the route ↗

If a particular papal event or museum visit matters, confirm its arrangements before fixing the surrounding days. Basilica entry and museum tickets are separate.

02

Choose your bases

For Rome, compare Borgo/Prati with the Saint Mary Major side of Esquilino or Monti. For Assisi, weigh the hill town’s atmosphere against the valley’s transport arrangements.

Accommodation comparison method ↗
03

Count all the transfers

Plan airport or station arrivals, Rome–Assisi rail, the valley-to-town connection and the return. Do not assume your rail ticket includes the final bus.

04

Protect a shorter day

Give each day one essential visit and optional additions. With only six days and five nights, choose one destination; see both individual guides for shorter stays.

THE DETAILS BEHIND THE PLAN

Check the arrangements that can change.

The detailed day numbers below follow the nine-day signature plan. Added days shift the sequence in the ten- and eleven-day versions.

Days one and two: arrive, then begin at Saint Peter’s

Keep arrival day limited to accommodation, food and orientation. If you have energy, visit a nearby church without a timed commitment.

Make Saint Peter’s the next morning’s main visit. Allow time for security, prayer and a pause afterward. Ordinary basilica entry is free; an optional timed-entry service is sold separately. Check the worship schedule and current access information before arranging the day. Official basilica information

Leave the afternoon open. The dome is an optional addition with its own physical demands. The Vatican Museums should have their own reserved half-day if they are important to you; add a Rome night for an unhurried visit rather than treating them as an automatic extension of the basilica. Official museum planning

Days three and four: the other papal basilicas

On day three, begin at Saint Mary Major, take a proper lunch break, then continue to Saint John Lateran. Use transport if the walk would reduce the attention or energy you want to bring to the churches. Consult ATAC’s official maps and current service notices.

On day four, give the morning to Saint Paul Outside the Walls. Keep the afternoon for rest, Mass at a confirmed time or a return to a church that mattered to you. The Rome guide links the individual basilicas’ visitor and worship information.

Day five: make the transfer the main task

Use the complete Rome–Assisi train and luggage guide to choose the ticket destination, local connection and check-in arrangement.

Search Trenitalia for your exact date and inspect each offered journey, including departure station, changes, connection time and arrival. Do not assume every service is direct or that a general journey estimate includes reaching your accommodation.

Assisi’s station is below the historic town. Trenitalia’s Assisi Link combines rail with the connecting bus when you select Assisi Centro. Confirm which portion your booking includes and follow the validity instructions on the tickets you receive. Assisi Link details

The local connection is Line C. Check the current operating-day timetable with Busitalia, including the stop that suits your accommodation. Avoid placing an essential liturgy immediately after your planned arrival. Check in, eat and make a short orientation walk if comfortable.

Days six and seven: let Assisi set the pace

On day six, begin at Saint Francis, with time for both prayer and the churches. After lunch and rest, visit Saint Clare when open. Its published schedule includes midday closures on ordinary weekdays, so check your date. Saint Clare’s official arrangements

For day seven’s morning, choose the Sanctuary of the Spoliation and Saint Carlo Acutis, or San Damiano. Visiting both may suit some travelers, but it adds a route below the center and another return. The tomb visit pauses during designated Sunday and holiday worship; San Damiano has separate church and visitor-route hours. Spoliation visitor guidance · San Damiano

After lunch, travel to Santa Maria degli Angeli for the Porziuncola, checking the sanctuary’s current schedule. Arrange the return to your accommodation before setting out. Porziuncola visitor information

Days eight and nine: return without a final rush

Keep the return to Rome as day eight’s main task. Check both the local connection down to Assisi station and the rail journey. Choose the last night’s address around your actual departure arrangements. Day nine is for getting to the airport or onward transport, with the margin your provider recommends.

Make it shorter, gentler or longer

Shorter: with six days and five nights, choose one destination. Trying to preserve every stop in both cities removes the rest and contingency built into this itinerary.

Gentler: add an Assisi night, split the two Rome basilicas across separate days, and arrange transport for demanding slopes. Every optional stop can be omitted.

Longer: add a Rome day for the museums or an Assisi day for the Eremo delle Carceri with suitable transport arranged both ways. Use the Assisi guide to check current seasonal services.

Next step: confirm your dates and rooms, enter all eight nights and transfers in the budget worksheet, and keep reservation details in your own travel notes. Use the checklist to track what remains to prepare.
