Plan your time: La Crosse day-trip and overnight pilgrimage itineraries

The decisions to make first
- Suggested time
- Half a day or a full day; add your travel separately.
- Arrival
- 5250 Justin Road, La Crosse, Wisconsin 54601.
- Ordinary grounds hours
- Regular hours: 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Check holiday closures and event notices.
- Decide first
- Your Mass, the ascent to the church and the return journey.
The official schedule lists English Mass at 12:15 p.m. Monday–Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Sunday also has an 11 a.m. Spanish Mass; Latin Masses and confession times are listed on the same page. All times are local (Central Time). Recheck for your date rather than treating this summary as a reservation.
The shrine’s planning page says an ordinary visit does not require a reservation. Use its form for a formal pilgrimage, requested guide or large group. Those arrangements need confirmation from the shrine; we do not make them.
A Marian pilgrimage in the Wisconsin bluffs
This La Crosse shrine is dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe and draws its devotion from the 1531 apparitions associated with Saint Juan Diego in Mexico. It is a Wisconsin place of pilgrimage, distinct from the basilica at the apparition site in Mexico City. The shrine church was dedicated on July 31, 2008. See the shrine’s own history and mission.
It may suit someone who wants a church-centered day with the option of outdoor devotional paths. Decide which element should hold the day together: Mass, time in the church, or a slow ascent with prayer. The entire grounds need not become a checklist. With limited time or energy, protect the church visit and treat additional walks as optional.
Begin at the Pilgrim Center. The official history page identifies it as the arrival point, with an information desk, maps, gift shop and café. Ask for current directions and the day’s practical advice before starting toward the church.
Plan the ascent before the drive.
The shrine describes the journey from the Pilgrim Center to the church as approximately half a mile, with another half mile of paved trails beyond it. Paved does not mean level or effortless. The official access FAQ says free golf-cart shuttles operate during normal business hours and provides information for visitors with physical disabilities.
If assistance matters to your visit, confirm how to board, where to wait and how to return before fixing a tight arrival time. Ask about your particular equipment and needs. We have not independently assessed step-free access or verified assistance for every part of the grounds.

Use the address above for your route planning and allow separate time for parking and reaching the church. Choose accommodation by its exact location and the next day’s journey. A room described as “La Crosse” does not establish the transfer time to the shrine.
A day with room to stay awhile
Morning: arrive with enough margin to stop at the Pilgrim Center and reach the church before your confirmed celebration. If you want confession, use the shrine’s current times and allow for others waiting. A scheduled Mass should not depend on an optimistic road estimate.
Midday: attend the Mass you chose, then take a meal and rest. Confirm café hours separately from the grounds hours. The shrine’s planning guidance also allows packed meals; check where to eat and any group meal arrangements directly.
Afternoon: choose one outdoor devotion or return quietly to the church. The regular schedule lists weekday and Saturday adoration at 3 p.m. and benediction at 4 p.m.; choose these only if the return trip remains manageable. Confirm the day’s program before staying for a particular devotion.
A shorter visit: keep the church and one period of prayer, and reduce the outdoor circuit. A fuller day: use extra time for a longer pause, a confirmed guided pilgrimage or a devotion. These are editorial frameworks, not a shrine timetable or a promise of available services.
Choose a same-day return or an overnight.

Return home the same day
Best considered when the entire round trip leaves room for the shrine, a meal and rest. Write down the likely departure from the shrine and the arrival home, including stops. If the return feels like the most demanding part, shorten the visit or compare an overnight.
Stay nearby
An off-site night can protect a rested arrival or departure. The shrine’s FAQ says it does not currently provide visitor accommodation. Its website also describes a Pilgrim House project; do not treat a project announcement as a bookable room. Confirm current lodging availability with the shrine and your chosen property.
In the budget planner, enter your own journey length and number of nights. Include transport, meals, the actual accommodation quote and any optional purchases or offerings. Admission is free according to the shrine’s FAQ, but that does not make the whole journey cost-free. Choose La Crosse in My pilgrimage to keep the guide, day framework and preparation steps together. Saving remains optional and local to your device.
Groups, seasons and the choice of shrine
For a large group or a guided pilgrimage, begin with the official coordination form. Identify dates, group size, meals, assistance and requested guidance. Visiting clergy should follow the shrine’s current suitability instructions. Wait for confirmation before presenting a requested service as booked.
Check the weather and visitor guidelines. The FAQ lists holiday closures; confirm that your intended date is open. This closure note was checked 20 September 2026. Wear shoes suitable for the paths and respectful church clothing. Photography should leave people free to pray; the shrine gives specific rules about flash, tripods and commercial photography. In wet, icy or very warm conditions, keep the outdoor part flexible and ask staff what is workable.
La Crosse or Champion? La Crosse offers devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe and an ascent from the Pilgrim Center to the church. Champion centers on Adele Brice’s story and the Wisconsin apparition site. Choose the spiritual focus and the practical journey that fit. If considering both, treat the transfer as its own travel task and check the entire route; this guide does not propose squeezing both into one day.
Keep four confirmed details.
- Your chosen Mass or devotion, checked for the actual date.
- The full outward and return journey, including any overnight.
- Your plan for the ascent, assistance if needed, and a meal.
- One optional addition that you can leave out without losing the purpose of the day.
Use the preparation checklist for the wider trip and the independent-versus-organized guide if you are deciding whether to join a group. These tools save only when you explicitly choose to save on your own device.
