THE PILGRIMAGE BEGINS HERE

Begin here

At Jasna Góra, the heart of the journey is prayer before the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa, known as the Black Madonna. The monastery around it is substantial, with a basilica, museums, courtyards, and a tower. Begin with the chapel. Let the rest of the visit grow from the time and energy you have left.

Częstochowa is the city; Jasna Góra is the Pauline monastery and Catholic shrine within it. This guide concerns the shrine in Poland. The National Shrine of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, is a separate destination.

Start with these decisions

Choose a day visit or one night

A day can hold prayer, Mass, lunch, and a little exploration. Staying overnight is useful if the evening Apel Jasnogórski matters to you, or if you would like another morning at the shrine before the journey home.

Check which station your train uses

Częstochowa and Częstochowa Stradom are distinct stations. The main station is also undergoing rebuilding. Our arrival and accommodation guide helps you make the last part of the journey manageable.

Choose one purpose for your first visit

It might be thanksgiving, an intention for someone you love, Mass, or simply time before the image. Let that shape how much else you add to the day.

Read the shrine's dated programme before choosing a worship time

The current daily programme is the most useful place to check what is happening in the chapel and basilica on the dates it lists.

Why Catholics come to the Black Madonna

The image shows Mary holding the Child Jesus and pointing toward him. It belongs to the Hodegetria tradition: Mary directs the pilgrim toward Christ. The shrine calls the image its greatest treasure and explains that devotion here centers on the image rather than a recorded Marian apparition. Its early history is uncertain; the attribution to Saint Luke is a devotional tradition, not an established historical authorship. The shrine's account of the image.

The Polish Bishops' Conference describes prayer before the image as the principal purpose of pilgrimage to Jasna Góra. It records the image's papal coronation in 1717 and connects its visible scars with the monastery's pillage in 1430. Those marks are part of the image's history and enduring place in Polish devotion. The Polish Bishops' Conference on the image.

Bring your intentions with you. A short prayer you know well can be enough. If you are accompanying a Catholic pilgrim or visiting out of curiosity, enter respectfully and allow the people around you room to worship.

The chapel, the basilica, and the wider monastery

The Chapel of the Miraculous Image

is the place to seek the Black Madonna. Follow the signs for Kaplica Cudownego Obrazu or Kaplica Matki Bożej. Leave time to pray once you arrive.

The basilica

adjoins the chapel but is a different church space. It has its own liturgical programme. Its Baroque interior offers another place to pause after the chapel. The city's architectural guide explains the relationship between the two buildings. Częstochowa's basilica guide.

The wider complex

can enrich the visit through its history, votive offerings, museums, and architecture. Choose one additional stop that interests you. If a guided visit would help, use the information centre's current offer and ask about the language, route, and booking before you arrive.

The tower is optional

Add the view if it suits your energy and the conditions. The information centre publishes separate hours for the monastery, museums, and tower, so check the spaces you want to visit. Visitor opening information.

Prayer and worship: use the right programme

The shrine's regular schedule lists daily Masses and the Apel Jasnogórski at 21:00. The Apel is an evening Marian prayer. The image is also covered and unveiled according to the liturgical programme, so opening hours alone do not establish when you will see it. Regular worship programme.

Use the daily programme alongside that regular schedule. On October 6, 2026, for example, the daily notice specifically said that the image would not be covered at midday. That is a useful reminder to check the date, rather than assume that a usual pattern applies to every visit.

If you hope to attend Mass or confession in a particular language, ask the shrine directly. Confirm whether English-language services or confession are available; a service listed in Latin does not answer that question. The shrine contacts can direct your enquiry.

Dress for a place of worship, keep conversation low in the churches, and follow staff instructions. During a service, settle in a place where you can remain without obstructing the congregation. Discuss your next stop outside the worship space, and follow posted photography rules.

Arrival: one detail to settle before booking

Search for both Częstochowa stations, then choose the train and last-mile journey together. A slightly different arrival can change your walk, taxi destination, and return departure.

The central station's rebuilding makes a little extra arrival time useful. PKP currently warns of changed platform access and departures and lists temporary facilities. Read that notice before travelling, particularly if you need assistance or plan to leave bags. PKP's current station information.

For journeys from Katowice Airport, check trains from Pyrzowice Lotnisko as well as road options. The airport currently lists the S9 route through Częstochowa, which may let you travel toward the shrine without first going into Katowice. Compare departures with your flight arrival. The arrival and stay guide covers stations, walking, local transport, luggage, and the accommodation decision in detail.

Meals, toilets, and a visit with less walking

Make a lunch break part of the plan. The shrine identifies food outlets just outside its walls, including the pilgrim-house bar and places for coffee. Choose somewhere you can sit, eat, and decide what to do next. The shrine's food information.

The information centre identifies pilgrim toilets at the entrance gate on the parking side, including an adapted toilet. It also lists toilets by the pilgrim house and tea room. Its accessibility guide describes wheelchair routes into the chapel and basilica, including a basilica threshold of about 3–5 cm. Several museums require staff help or have significant stairs; the Treasury and Knights' Hall are not straightforward alternatives. Contact the information centre about the particular spaces you want to visit, and build your route around those answers. The shrine's physical accessibility guide.

A shorter route can center on the chapel and basilica, with lunch and a final period of prayer before you leave.

Give the visit a simple shape

One day

arrive with time to settle, pray in the chapel, attend a service if it suits your plan, eat lunch, and choose one additional space. Set your leaving time before the afternoon begins.

Two days with one night

make the first afternoon an introduction, keep the evening for the Apel if desired, and return the next morning for prayer and a little more exploration. Book a room that makes the evening return comfortable.

Our one- and two-day itinerary sets out both options, with an example of an overnight journey from Katowice.

Before you leave home

Save your train's exact arrival and departure station, accommodation address, shrine contact, and the dated worship programme. Decide where the luggage will go. Keep the budget in Polish złoty (PLN) so room costs, tickets, meals, and local transport remain easy to compare.

Then leave a little room in the day. The point of the preparation is to make it easier to give your attention to prayer once you arrive.
