Choose a place My pilgrimage Budget Checklist

A practical checklist for an independent pilgrimage. Work through what applies to your trip; an item can count as complete once you have decided it is not needed.

01 · Choose your pilgrimage Choose the sacred place and the intention you want to bring. Decide who is traveling and agree on a comfortable daily pace. Choose dates, counting arrival, departure and rest days separately. Read the destination guide and check the shrine’s official calendar.

02 · Before paying Build a group budget, including travel, meals, local journeys and a reserve. Check passport, entry and transit requirements with official authorities, if applicable. Compare cancellation terms and decide whether travel insurance suits your needs. Confirm any access, assistance, dietary or medication arrangements you need.

03 · Connect the journey Arrange the main journey, allowing a realistic connection margin. Choose accommodation by the route to the shrine, then confirm facilities and check-in times. Plan the last leg from the airport or station, and the return journey. Reserve any visits or events that require booking through the official channel.

04 · Shape each day Choose one or two main sacred places for each day. Confirm current Mass, prayer, visiting and closure times. Leave time for meals, queues, quiet prayer and proper rest. Choose a shorter alternative for a tiring day or difficult weather.

05 · Pack with purpose Pack comfortable footwear, suitable layers, rain protection and respectful church clothing. Prepare personal medication and essentials, checking any travel rules that apply. Save tickets, booking references, accommodation details and transport information offline. Bring the small things that help you pray, and a way to carry water.

06 · Before setting out Recheck transport notices, the weather and the shrine’s latest visitor information. Confirm your arrival time and the entrance or meeting point you will use. Share your itinerary with someone you trust and keep emergency contacts available. Review photography and worship etiquette before entering sacred places.

07 · Carry it home Allow a little space after returning before filling the calendar again. Write down a place, prayer or encounter you want to remember. Choose one small practice to bring into ordinary life. Pass along a useful correction to a guide if visitor arrangements have changed.
