FÁTIMA / CHOOSE THE KIND OF PILGRIMAGE
Fátima on the 12th and 13th: give the gathering its own trip
If you want to join an anniversary pilgrimage, plan around the gathering itself. Arrive with time to settle, protect the evening, and leave the next day’s departure loose enough for the celebration you came to attend. Aljustrel can wait for another day.
If your main hope is quiet time at the Chapel of the Apparitions and a flexible walk through the sacred places, consider dates outside a major gathering. Neither choice is a lesser pilgrimage; they ask different things of your nights, transport and energy.

Choose the gathering or the quieter framework
Begin with the Sanctuary’s event calendar and dated worship program. A monthly date is not a complete itinerary: confirm the actual celebration, start time, place and any special instructions for your month and year.
Choose an anniversary gathering when sharing its principal celebrations is the reason for traveling. Make room for waiting, arriving before worship and returning afterward. Treat the day as an event day rather than a sightseeing day with a procession added at the end.
Choose another date when you want more freedom to rearrange visits around rest, weather and the village sites. Check the calendar anyway; a date outside your intended anniversary can still contain a large group or special event. No date here is promised to be crowd-free.
Combine both by adding an ordinary day before or after the gathering. That gives the Sanctuary celebration and Aljustrel separate places in the stay, rather than asking one day to serve two incompatible rhythms.
A past example: 12 October 2026
In the programme checked 26 September 2026, the Sanctuary’s 12 October 2026 event entry listed the international Rosary at 9:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Apparitions, followed by the candlelight procession and a celebration at the Prayer Area altar.
That gathering has ended. The example shows why evening worship needs separate transport and overnight planning. Use the current Sanctuary calendar and dated programme for a future pilgrimage; do not reuse this event’s time as a current promise.
The planning patterns below can be adapted to another anniversary once its own program is confirmed. They do not carry October 2026’s time forward to a different month or year. An older event report or special-measures notice should not be treated as current visitor instructions.
Give each overnight a job
One night: the compact version
Arrive on the 12th early enough to check in, eat and rest before the confirmed evening program. Stay that night. On the 13th, choose the celebration that fits a realistic departure and confirm where the bags will remain after checkout. This can work, but it leaves little spare time if arrival is delayed.
Two nights: protect both sides
Arrive on the 11th and stay through the night of the 12th if getting settled before the gathering matters most. Alternatively, arrive on the 12th and stay through the night of the 13th if you want an unhurried day after the evening program. Choose which travel pressure you are trying to remove.
Three nights: the whole gathering between travel days
Arrive on the 11th, spend the 12th and 13th in Fátima, and depart on the 14th. This is the clearest pattern when the main evening and following-day celebrations are both priorities. Optional village visits still depend on energy and opening hours.
These are editorial night-count examples, not packages or availability claims. Use the ordinary two-day itinerary for a separate Sanctuary-and-Aljustrel stay; do not simply paste every stop from it into an anniversary day.
Book the room around the return after prayer
Compare the room’s exact approach with the place where the evening program finishes. Check the route in both directions, including slopes, crossings and any event-related restrictions. Ask the property about late return, reception and meals before choosing.
A lower-priced room farther away may require a transfer at the hardest hour to arrange. Add the return ride and its availability to the comparison. A central room has value only if its actual access and facilities suit the people traveling.
Ask whether the dates have a minimum stay, special deposit or different cancellation deadline. Compare the full quote and confirm bed arrangements. Do not assume an event rate will be available later or that every property uses the same conditions.
The Sanctuary links its own accommodation booking service from the official website. It is an option to investigate, not a promise of space or an endorsement of a particular room. Use the same room-specific questions for every property.
Make the outward and return journeys unequal
For travel from Lisbon, use the arrival guide to choose the terminal and the complete route. Then check whether your actual service leaves room for check-in and rest before the event. An ordinary day-trip departure may be poorly matched to a late evening celebration.
On the return, add luggage collection, reaching the departure point and the operator’s boarding margin after the celebration. Do not choose a bus because its time looks close to an assumed end of Mass. If the full event matters, select a later workable departure or another night.
For a driver or hired vehicle, confirm current pickup instructions and where the vehicle can actually meet you. An address used on an ordinary day may not be available during a large gathering. Ask for the delayed-finish procedure.
Keep an alternative for a missed connection that you can realistically use. “Take a taxi” is not a complete fallback unless the journey, availability and likely total cost have been investigated.
A day built around the evening
Morning: settle essential arrangements and make one quiet visit. If you have traveled that day, the arrival itself may be enough. Do not begin with a long walking circuit simply because the main celebration is later.
Middle of the day: eat, rest and confirm the program and return route. Charge the phone and keep the room address available offline. Agree on a recognizable meeting point with companions before entering a busy area.
Before the gathering: have the next meal early enough that it does not become a rushed gap in worship. Bring weather-appropriate layers and follow current rules for items and candles. Ask the Sanctuary about any specific assistance or participation arrangement you need.
Afterward: return by the route already chosen. Keep tomorrow morning adjustable. You do not need to attend every available devotion to have participated fully in the purpose of the trip.
When the gathering is too much
Choose in advance what you will shorten if standing, weather or fatigue becomes difficult. Identify a place to pause and a way back to the room. Confirm seating or assistance directly rather than assuming it will be available because the site welcomes pilgrims.
Companions can choose different lengths of participation if they have a clear meeting and return plan. Keep responsibility for children, bags and anyone needing support explicit.
If a large event is the obstacle rather than the purpose, change the date or give the ordinary program a central place. The destination guide explains the sacred places; the pilgrimage does not depend on attending its largest gathering.
Before paying: put the confirmed event, room nights, arrival, return and cancellation deadlines in one note. Add the full accommodation and transport quotes to the budget planner. Leave speculative event details marked as unconfirmed until the Sanctuary publishes them.
