Plan a pilgrimage together, with room for different needs
You can share an intention without wanting identical days. Use this worksheet before booking to agree on the pace, spending and practical responsibilities that will make the pilgrimage manageable for everyone.
Print this page or copy the prompts into your own notes. Each person can answer the first section privately, then share what is useful. You do not need to explain a diagnosis, disclose a private prayer intention or justify every preference. Record the practical arrangement you need in your own copy.
Destination or options: Space for your own notes.
Travelers: Space for your own notes.
Working dates, full days and nights: Space for your own notes.
Agreement reviewed on: Space for your own notes.
1. Begin with one priority each
| Question | Person A | Person B / other companion |
|---|---|---|
| What is the main reason I want to go? | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
| What one part of the pilgrimage matters most to me? | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
| What would make a day too demanding? | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
| What do I need the shared plan to allow? | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
| What can I happily leave out? | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
For a larger group, give each person the same questions. Seek agreement on what everyone can reasonably do together before adding optional activities.
Our shared purpose, in one sentence:
Space for your own notes.
2. Agree on the rhythm of a day
Make a plan you can change when you are tired, rather than promising to keep up with the busiest person.
| Decision | Our agreement |
|---|---|
| Earliest comfortable departure from the room | Space for your own notes. |
| Walking/standing limits we need to plan around | Space for your own notes. |
| How often we will pause or seek a seat | Space for your own notes. |
| Meal times or food arrangements we need to protect | Space for your own notes. |
| Rest at the accommodation or elsewhere | Space for your own notes. |
| The shared worship or prayer we hope to attend | Space for your own notes. |
| What we will omit first if the day is too full | Space for your own notes. |
| When we will decide whether an evening visit still fits | Space for your own notes. |
Confirm routes, seating, toilets, room features and assistance with the relevant provider when a particular arrangement is essential. A general destination description does not answer those questions for your party. Use the accommodation questions before choosing a room.
3. Set spending boundaries before anyone pays
Use one currency in your shared budget. Agree how costs will be divided; equal shares are one possible choice.
Currency: Space for your own notes. Group planning limit: Space for your own notes.
Each person's agreed share or limit, kept privately if preferred: Space for your own notes.
| Decision | Our agreement |
|---|---|
| Shared accommodation and room arrangement | Space for your own notes. |
| Meals included / meals paid separately | Space for your own notes. |
| Shared transport and optional transport | Space for your own notes. |
| Optional visits or purchases paid individually | Space for your own notes. |
| Reserve and who may authorize using it | Space for your own notes. |
| How and when we will settle shared costs | Space for your own notes. |
| Changes that require everyone's agreement before payment | Space for your own notes. |
Before a shared nonrefundable payment, confirm that each person understands the amount, what it covers, the cancellation conditions and their agreed responsibility. Record actual deadlines in your own confirmation notes.
4. Make time together and time apart explicit
The part of each day we hope to share:
Space for your own notes.
Quiet or individual prayer time we want to allow:
Space for your own notes.
An optional visit some of us want:
Space for your own notes.
What the others will do instead:
Space for your own notes.
What must be true before we separate:
Space for your own notes.
Everyone involved should be comfortable with the arrangement, able to manage their chosen activity and return, and know how to contact or rejoin the others. If that does not fit your group, choose a shared shorter activity instead.
5. Choose a meeting arrangement you can both describe
“At the church” may be unclear where a shrine has several buildings or entrances. Agree on an exact permitted meeting point after checking the site's current arrangement. A map pin is an orientation aid; it does not verify an entrance or route.
Exact meeting point and a written description:
Space for your own notes.
Meeting time: Space for your own notes. How we will tell each other about a delay: Space for your own notes.
If a phone has no signal or its battery is flat, our fallback is:
Space for your own notes.
If a change means we cannot use that meeting point:
Space for your own notes.
Keep the accommodation address and the agreed arrangement in each person's own copy. Plan this before separating; do not rely on a future message being received.
6. Name who will do what
Researching, paying and holding a confirmation can be different responsibilities. “We will book it” needs an owner and a next step.
| Task | Responsible person | Status | Next step / due date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Candidate dates and usable days | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
| Main journey and return | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
| Final transfers and assistance, if needed | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
| Room and essential features | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
| Current worship and visit arrangements | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
| Budget and payment agreement | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
| Confirmation copies and cancellation deadlines | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
| Recheck before departure | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. | Space for your own notes. |
Use plain status words such as to research, awaiting an answer, agreed, booked or not needed. A message asking a question is not a confirmation. Keep booking references, payment details and any sensitive information in your own records rather than a public or shared website field.
7. A fictional compromise
Anna wants a town walk and an evening celebration. Michael wants the shared pilgrimage to include a proper rest and feels that both additions would be too much on the same day.
They agree to keep one shared worship anchor, lunch and rest. Anna may take a limited optional walk while Michael rests only if both are comfortable with the route, contact and meeting arrangement. They will reassess the evening after the rest; it remains optional. If the practical arrangements for time apart are unclear, they will omit the walk.
Neither person has to treat the other's preferred activity as the measure of a successful pilgrimage. Their agreement protects the purpose they share and the limits they need to respect.
A difference we need to resolve:
Space for your own notes.
Our workable compromise:
Space for your own notes.
8. Close with a usable agreement
Our three shared priorities:
- Space for your own notes.
- Space for your own notes.
- Space for your own notes.
The optional part we can let go first:
Space for your own notes.
The next unresolved decision:
Space for your own notes.
Who will act, and when we will review the answer together:
Space for your own notes.
Review this agreement once you have real quotes and again before departure. During the pilgrimage, a short conversation over the next day's plan may be more useful than trying to settle everything in advance.
