Put the shrine and the room on the same plan

A Catholic Walsingham journey has two local destinations: Houghton St Giles for the Slipper Chapel and Chapel of Reconciliation; Little Walsingham if your room is in the village. Write down both addresses before choosing the rail ticket or the room.

The Catholic shrine's postal address is Houghton St Giles, Walsingham, Norfolk NR22 6AL. Elmham House, its pilgrim hotel, is on Friday Market Place, NR22 6EG. A pickup request saying only “Walsingham shrine” can be ambiguous because the Anglican shrine is in the village. Use the full Catholic name and destination address. Catholic shrine contacts

London by rail: choose King's Lynn, then the road journey

For London, start with Great Northern from King's Cross to King's Lynn. Search your travel date and read the complete result, including any change or replacement bus. Arrange the taxi pickup around that journey. Official journey search

Checked October 6, 2026: Great Northern publishes amended journeys on the Cambridge–Ely–King's Lynn route because of speed restrictions. Journey times depend on those arrangements. Use the live planner and current Fen Line notice for both directions.

Rail plus arranged car: ask for a station meeting point, the exact room or shrine destination, luggage capacity and what happens if the train is delayed. Reserve the return as part of the same decision. If the provider is collecting you from the rural shrine, agree where to meet and keep its contact information available.

Rail plus buses: continue to the King's Lynn Transport Interchange, then compare the routes below. Include time to reach the interchange and wait for each bus, as well as the final journey from the village to the Catholic shrine.

For rail assistance, Great Northern's Passenger Assist page explains advance requests and station arrangements. Book any accessible road vehicle separately, describing your equipment and the assistance you need to the transfer provider.

Local buses: compare the inland connection with the coast

Lynx publishes 49/49A connections from King's Lynn to Fakenham, and Coastliner 36 between King's Lynn, the coast, Wells-next-the-Sea and Fakenham through Little Walsingham. Read the route and date together: a through coastal journey and an inland Fakenham interchange are different plans. 49 timetable · Coastliner 36 timetable

For the inland choice, search both legs to and from Fakenham's Oak Street, allowing time between buses. Identify the Walsingham stop and the journey from it to your room or Houghton St Giles. For the coastal choice, compare the total time: a through bus may take longer than the inland route with a change.

The Abbey's directions identify the usual central village stop as The Bull, but diversions can move it. Read Lynx's stop list and service updates for your date. Before travelling with luggage, ask which stop and onward route serve the Catholic shrine; the sources checked for this guide do not establish a stop at the chapel itself. Village transport orientation

A workable return means more than finding a late bus. Check the village-to-Fakenham leg, the onward King's Lynn connection and your train together. If the resulting shrine day is too short, compare an overnight or an arranged road transfer.

Driving: use the shrine's approach, then the room's parking

The shrine recommends NR22 6AS for navigation and following its road signs. It warns that some systems send drivers to unsuitable lanes, including Grays Lane's deep ford. Save its official driving directions; do not substitute the postal address for the recommended approach without checking.

Accommodation parking is a separate question. Elmham House says it has no residents' car park; its guest information identifies village parking options. Confirm where you will park and how you will reach reception with bags, rather than expecting parking inside the hotel grounds.

If traveling by coach with a parish, the shrine's directions specify the preferred approach and warn against using the village High Street. The group organizer should coordinate arrival directly.

Three bases and the tradeoff each creates

Little Walsingham

Begin here for a residential pilgrimage with a village evening. Elmham House provides the Catholic shrine's accommodation and an online booking portal. Choose it for those arrangements if they fit, then arrange Houghton St Giles transfers. Other village addresses should be judged by reception, meal availability and the exact room route. Elmham House

Its 2026 guest guidance, checked October 6, gives room access from 3:30 p.m. and departure by 10 a.m.; meals can be prearranged. It describes adapted entrances and a lift subject to restrictions. Confirm the exact room, bathroom and lift suitability before booking. Published hotel-page and PDF tariffs differ, so use a direct quote or current portal result. Guest information

Fakenham

Investigate when bus connections or a wider Norfolk itinerary shape the stay. A room near the interchange can reduce one luggage journey; it still leaves shrine travel on the visiting day. Compare meals and each required transfer alongside the room price.

King's Lynn

Consider this if rail arrival is late or you want to keep bags near the departure station. Use a separate shrine-day transfer rather than placing noon Mass immediately after the train. The tradeoff is more road travel on the pilgrimage day.

Worked example: October 13–15, 2026

A two-night village stay, with Wednesday October 14 as the shrine day. This is an editorial example checked against published visitor arrangements on October 6. It assumes two adults with small bags, a suitable room available in Little Walsingham, and prearranged private transfers that accept the requested times. No room, vehicle or train has been reserved. Rail arrival targets and car pickups below are planning choices, not a quoted timetable.

  1. Tuesday October 13 — arrive and settle

Choose a current King's Cross–King's Lynn journey reaching King's Lynn in the early afternoon. Give the car provider the actual train and arrange collection there, with the agreed delay procedure. Travel to your village accommodation; if using Elmham House, plan around its published 3:30 p.m. room access rather than assuming early check-in.

Arrange dinner before travel. If using the shrine hotel's meal service, ask for the relevant booking and dietary terms; otherwise identify a village meal option open that evening. Keep the Catholic parish church or a short village stroll optional. The shrine complex is a separate trip for tomorrow.

  2. Wednesday October 14 — the Catholic shrine day

Ask for a 10 a.m. village pickup to Houghton St Giles, with an arrival target around 10:15 a.m. The short interval is a planning allowance to be confirmed by the provider, not a guaranteed drive. On arrival, locate the Slipper Chapel, Chapel of Reconciliation and toilets. If confession is essential, check the start time directly.

Join noon Pilgrim Mass when confirmed. Eat at the on-site tea room after worship, subject to service and dietary suitability. Use the afternoon for the grounds, a chapel return or scheduled prayer. For a shrine-only day, request a 3:45 p.m. return pickup to the village. If choosing afternoon benediction, agree a collection time that leaves the celebration unhurried.

The Pilgrim Way can replace the car in one direction only after checking current conditions and your ability to complete it. Do not let an optional countryside walk unsettle the reserved return.

  3. Thursday October 15 — depart without another excursion

Have breakfast, collect bags and check out. Book the village-to-King's Lynn pickup backward from your chosen train, allowing the provider's road estimate plus a delay margin and station time. For Passenger Assist, Great Northern recommends being at the station 20 minutes before departure. Leave a final shrine visit out of this departure chain.

The two-night plan leaves a full shrine day between journeys. With one night, choose whether it would be more useful to sleep locally before the shrine visit or stay after it.

Cost the complete loop

Compare the return rail quote, both station transfers, village-to-shrine journeys, two nights, meals and any optional Abbey admission. Price transport for the whole party, using the same luggage and equipment information in every quote. The worked example relies on paid private transfers that you arrange yourself.
