WISCONSIN / TIME FOR PRAYER AND REST
La Crosse pilgrimage: a day trip or an overnight stay?
Give the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe a full day built around Mass, quiet prayer, a meal and a manageable amount of walking. Add one night when it removes a rushed arrival or tiring journey home; choose two nights for a complete shrine day between separate travel days.
Start with the Our Lady of Guadalupe La Crosse guide for background and orientation. Use La Crosse pilgrimage by train for the rail journey, then this page to choose the time you need.

Choose a day trip, one night or two
This plan is for the Wisconsin shrine at 5250 Justin Road, La Crosse, WI 54601, with ordinary grounds hours of 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Official hours and location. The Guadalupe apparitions associated with Saint Juan Diego took place at Tepeyac in present-day Mexico City; this itinerary concerns La Crosse. The shrine's Guadalupe account.
| Trip length | When it works well | What to protect |
|---|---|---|
| Day trip | You can arrive before the chosen Mass and return without an exhausting day. | A substantial visit, meal break and flexible departure |
| One night | Sleeping locally removes a very early start or a late journey home. | Decide whether the night belongs before or after the shrine day |
| Two nights | Travel is long, your group needs a slower pace, or you want separate travel days. | Put the full shrine day in the middle |
Select the Mass first, add time to reach the church and settle, then work back to arrival. Repeat the exercise for the return journey. If either end feels strained, a night locally may help more than an additional activity.
Ordinary worship to plan around
The shrine publishes the following regular schedule. Times are local to La Crosse. Check the official worship schedule and event calendar for your date.
| Day | Regular Masses |
|---|---|
| Monday–Saturday | 8:30 a.m. Traditional Latin; 12:15 p.m. English |
| Sunday | 9 a.m. Traditional Latin; 11 a.m. Spanish; 1 p.m. English |
The plans below use the ordinary English Masses and can be adapted around the Mass you choose. Confession and Rosary overlap in the pre-Mass intervals used here; choose your priority and allow for a Confession queue.
Opening also has exceptions. The FAQ lists closures including January 1, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Check holidays and special celebrations individually. Official visiting FAQ.
A full shrine day, Monday–Saturday
Use this suggested sequence for an ordinary day. The arrival, meal and walking blocks are editorial recommendations; worship times come from the shrine.
| Part of the day | Suggested plan |
|---|---|
| Around 10 a.m. | Arrive, use the facilities and check the day's arrangements at the Pilgrim Center. |
| Morning | Make your way to the Shrine Church with a brief prayer stop. Reach it before the 11:45 a.m. Confession or Rosary if participating. |
| 12:15 p.m. | Attend English Mass. Keep the period immediately afterward open. |
| After Mass | Take lunch and a proper rest, allowing time for movement between the church and Pilgrim Center. |
| Afternoon | Choose one devotional area or make the church your main place of prayer. |
| 3–4 p.m., if staying | Return for Adoration and Benediction; allow time afterward to reach your vehicle or pickup before ordinary closing. |
The grounds map identifies the Votive Candle Chapel, Saint Kateri and Saint Joseph devotional areas, Memorial to the Unborn, Rosary Walk and Way of the Cross. Choose a place that connects with your intention and spend time there. Official grounds map.
For a shorter visit, keep the morning, Mass and meal, then leave the afternoon programme for another time. If Adoration is your priority, protect that interval and reduce the earlier walking. Set the return journey to match the pilgrimage you want.
A Sunday visit
For the 1 p.m. English Mass, a late-morning arrival gives time to orient yourself and reach the church for the 12:30 p.m. Confession or Rosary. Eat breakfast before setting out and decide whether you prefer an early lunch or a meal after Mass.
For the earlier Latin or Spanish Mass, move arrival earlier and check the transport. An early service leaves less time between opening and worship; confirm assistance ahead if you need a cart.
Keep the afternoon flexible: quiet prayer, one devotional stop and a meal can make a complete day. Verify any Sunday Adoration plans directly because the regular schedule lists the afternoon period for Monday–Saturday.
Keep lunch from taking over the day
The Culina Mariana Café is at the shrine. Check its current hours and group arrangements before relying on lunch there. Groups of more than ten are asked to contact the shrine ten days ahead if they plan to eat at the café; the pilgrimage coordinator is listed at 608-519-4429.
The shrine also welcomes packed meals. Official pilgrimage planning. The FAQ lists picnic tables near the parking lot from April through October. Official visiting FAQ. For another season, confirm a suitable lunch arrangement.
If eating in La Crosse, allow for leaving the grounds, travelling, eating and returning. The trip between noon Mass and afternoon Adoration requires more planning than a meal already with you. For children or relatives who tire quickly, a simple lunch and seated rest can preserve the afternoon.
The hill and assistance
The church is half a mile uphill from the Pilgrim Center, and the shrine describes carts as an accessibility option. Official grounds information. Consider the gradient and your energy as well as the distance.
The FAQ lists free golf-cart shuttles during normal business hours and wheelchairs at the Pilgrim Center and church. Official visiting FAQ. Visitors needing a shuttle are asked to check with the front-desk receptionist. Preparing for pilgrimage.
Before travelling, ask about boarding assistance, your mobility device, the chosen devotional route and the return downhill. A paved path alone does not establish a level route suitable for every visitor.
For midday Mass, our suggested arrival margin is 45–60 minutes before Mass, with extra time for assistance or Confession. For early Mass, confirm opening and assistance directly. Wear shoes appropriate for the conditions and shorten outdoor movement when weather or fatigue calls for it.
One night: before or after the shrine day?
Stay beforehand when the difficult part is reaching La Crosse. Arrive, eat and settle on day one; prepare the morning transfer. Keep the next day for the shrine, with departure chosen around the worship you want. If leaving after Benediction makes the journey too late, shorten the visit or add a second night.
Stay afterward when you can arrive comfortably in the morning but prefer to rest after a full day. Visit the shrine, eat in La Crosse and leave the following morning. The benefit can simply be avoiding travel when tired.
Choose an area by a reliable shrine transfer, food at the right times, suitable room access and straightforward parking or pickup. Downtown can suit dinner and a riverfront pause together; another part of the area may fit your arrival route. Check the actual journey from the address you book.
Two nights: arrival, pilgrimage, departure
- Arrival day: travel, eat and rest. Add a brief shrine visit only if arrival fits confirmed opening comfortably.
- Main day: follow the full-day sequence, adjusting walking and meals to your group's energy.
- Departure day: breakfast and onward travel. Add a return visit only if there is a particular reason and transport allows.
This pattern helps with a long journey or different walking abilities. Two nights do not require two full shrine days; let the extra time slow the pace.
For an optional pause away from the shrine, Riverside Park at 100 State Street sits between the Mississippi River and downtown, with places to sit and the International Friendship Gardens. City park information. The official downtown walking itinerary connects the park with nearby streets, shops and restaurants. A short visit followed by dinner can be enough.
Without a car: arrange the return first
Plan the complete journey between your arrival point, overnight base and 5250 Justin Road, including the return pickup. Confirm timing and assistance before booking a tight onward departure.
La Crosse MTU supplies route maps, timetables and the Transit app for city journeys. Verify the exact destination and walking required before choosing a bus route; arrange the final shrine transfer and pickup separately. Official MTU information. For rail arrivals, continue with the La Crosse train guide.
Before leaving home, confirm worship and opening exceptions, lunch, access and return transport. Formal, guided and large-group visits use the coordinator; ordinary individual visits need no reservation. Official pilgrimage coordination.
