Plan the last part of the journey first

You can visit Knock without hiring a car. The useful question is how you will reach the village of Knock after your flight or train, and how you will leave again. Ireland West Airport is about 20 km from the shrine; Claremorris railway station is about 11 km away. Neither puts you at the shrine gates. Knock Shrine’s travel information.

Before booking, look up the whole journey for your travel date. Then check that it leaves the time you want for prayer. If a connection creates a long wait or an early departure, an overnight or prearranged taxi may make the trip work better.

Route numbers are starting points for a dated search, not a promise that every departure serves every stop. Bus Éireann airport routes, route 440, route 64.

From Ireland West Airport

Bus Éireann identifies routes 440 and 64 as airport services. Use Bus Éireann’s route planner and timetables or TFI’s journey planner with Ireland West Airport as your origin and Knock village as your destination. Do not end the search at a stop labeled only “Knock Airport.”

Read the stop list for your chosen departure. The published 440 timetable contains both airport and village stops, including Knock Main Street. Some trips follow different patterns, so the route number alone does not identify the right bus. Operator’s published 440 timetable.

Leave a realistic interval after landing for arrival procedures, bags, and finding the stop. If the connection is poor, check taxi arrangements with the airport or your accommodation before traveling. The airport’s ground transport information lists the available transport choices.

For the return, work backward from the flight. Bus Éireann advises airport passengers to plan to arrive three hours before departure; also follow your airline’s check-in instructions. A taxi quotation is useful if the published bus cannot meet that timing.

From Dublin by train

Search Irish Rail for Dublin Heuston to Claremorris on the day you will travel. Claremorris is served by the Dublin Heuston–Westport and Ballina railway routes. Buy the rail ticket only after deciding how the final transfer will work. Claremorris station information.

For the last leg, compare:

  • A dated bus connection. Route 440’s published stops include Claremorris on Dalton Street and Knock Main Street. Use the journey planner to account for the walk between the railway station and the appropriate bus stop; do not assume the bus boards at the station.
  • A prearranged taxi. Agree the pickup place, price, luggage capacity, and any access requirements. Confirm how to contact the driver if your train is delayed.

A short road distance does not make a missed connection inconsequential. Save the return train, bus, and taxi details before you arrive. If you would spend most of a same-day visit checking the time, consider staying in Knock overnight.

From Dublin Airport

For the rail option, you first need to reach Heuston station. Irish Rail identifies Dublin Express as its direct airport–Heuston coach connection. Check the operator’s current route and stop information, then allow for flight arrival procedures, road traffic, and finding your train. Irish Rail airport connections.

Treat this as three journeys when budgeting time: airport to Heuston, train to Claremorris, and Claremorris to Knock. Keep the final transfer visible when comparing flights or planning your first day in Ireland.

From Galway, Sligo, Westport, or Athlone

For Galway and Sligo, start with the Expressway 64 route page. For Westport and Athlone, start with Bus Éireann 440. Search for your exact date and the village stop, then inspect the individual trip’s stop list.

If the planner suggests a change, allow for the connection rather than treating the overall route as direct. Check the return separately, particularly on Sundays, public holidays, or after an evening liturgy.

If you need accessible transport

Make the access arrangements before buying a journey that depends on them. Claremorris station is listed as unstaffed, with level platform access, a ramp for train access, and an accessible toilet. Irish Rail publishes a 4–12-hour notice period for other Intercity stations; Claremorris is outside its specified one-hour list. Confirm your own journey with the railway. Claremorris facilities, Irish Rail assistance policy. Assistance-policy wording rechecked 17 October 2026.

TFI asks passengers reserving accessible transport on a regional PSO bus service to contact its support team at least 24 hours in advance. Expressway has its own booking arrangements. Ask about the precise service, boarding stop, wheelchair or scooter dimensions, and any transfer. TFI wheelchair-space guidance.

Once at Knock, the shrine offers assistance within its grounds. That service does not replace your airport or railway transfer. Shrine mobility information.

Save these details before you travel

Write down the exact arrival and departure stops, travel date, last practical return connection, and one contact for help. Keep a copy available without needing a mobile signal. Add your booked accommodation’s address and check-in arrangements if staying.

Then plan the part you came for: our Knock pilgrimage guide and a day or overnight itinerary.

After the journey: bags, lunch and the return stop

If arriving before check-in, ask your accommodation to confirm bag storage and collection before fixing the shrine visit. On a day trip, take a bag you can comfortably carry; this guide has not verified a public left-luggage service at the shrine or Claremorris station.

The shrine lists Café Le Chéile beside Knock Museum for breakfast, lunch and snacks, with published hours Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–15:00 and Monday closure. A late inbound service can put you past lunch there. Decide the meal and any property check-in before adding an afternoon activity.

For a Claremorris rail return, fix the village pickup and station arrival margin with the taxi operator. For a bus return, save the precise stop named by the dated timetable; an airport service and a village service may use different stops. Collect bags early enough that the final journey does not depend on a rushed extra errand.
