ITALY / TIME FOR FRANCIS AND CLARE
Assisi pilgrimage itinerary: one or two days
One full day can give you a focused visit to the Basilica of San Francesco and Basilica of Santa Chiara. Two full days allow more time for prayer and separate visits to San Damiano and the Porziuncola at Santa Maria degli Angeli.
Choose one celebration, give Francis and Clare time of their own, and keep meals and rest in the day. Start with the Assisi destination guide; use Rome to Assisi by train for the intercity journey.

Choose your usable days
Count travel separately: reaching Assisi railway station does not put you in the hilltown. Choose the visits that fit the time between arrival at your first church and leaving for your return journey.
| Time available | A useful starting plan |
|---|---|
| One full day | San Francesco, lunch and rest, then Santa Chiara |
| Two full days | The hilltown on day one; San Damiano and Santa Maria degli Angeli on day two |
| Two nights | Arrival, one full day, departure the next morning |
| Three nights | Arrival, two full days, departure the next morning |
| A shorter day trip | One principal church, a meal and a second visit only if the transfers fit |
These are independent planning suggestions. All times below are local to Assisi; use the linked custodians and operators to confirm your travel date.
Arrive at the station, then reach the hilltown

Settle luggage arrangements before adding a church visit. A day trip works best with a small bag and a clear return plan: include the journey down from the hilltown and the boarding margin for your train. For the full arrival choices, continue with the Rome–Assisi train guide.
Fit church visits around worship and opening
San Francesco has an upper church, a lower church and the crypt containing Francis's tomb. Individual visitor entry is free and does not require a ticket; organized groups use its reservation arrangements. Official basilica booking information.

One day: Francis, lunch and Clare
Morning: begin at San Francesco
Give the basilica your first substantial morning block. If arriving that day, begin after the actual rail and bus journey, with fewer additional stops.
Spend time in the lower church and at Francis's tomb, then visit the upper church when available. Choose a few things to notice in the frescoes and leave a quiet interval for the intention you brought. The basilica's account of its churches.
For a weekday example, an arrival around 9 a.m. leaves room before the currently listed 11 a.m. Mass. The arrival target is our suggestion. With less time, choose the tomb and one church instead of recovering the morning by hurrying.
Midday: eat and rest
Keep lunch in the itinerary. Use the interval for a seated rest and the move across town before Santa Chiara's ordinary weekday reopening. A return to your room may help if it is practical; otherwise choose a break near your route.
For children or a companion who tires easily, decide over lunch whether the afternoon still works. Clare can belong to another day when the morning has been enough.
Afternoon: give Santa Chiara time of her own
Santa Chiara holds Clare's tomb and the original San Damiano crucifix in its chapel. The crucifix's name does not mean the original remains at San Damiano. Franciscan account of Santa Chiara.
Visit after the confirmed reopening, with time for prayer. Assess the descent to the tomb separately from entering the main church. The municipal visitor page lists individual admission as free. Visit Assisi: Santa Chiara.
For a day trip, let the return bus and train set the end of the afternoon. For an overnight, keep the remaining time for a meal, rest or a quiet return. Two principal visits can make a complete day.
Two days: San Damiano and the Porziuncola
Use the first day for the hilltown. Let the second connect San Damiano with the small Porziuncola church inside the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, allowing time for the separate journeys.
Morning: San Damiano
San Damiano is associated with Francis's call to repair the Church and with Clare's community. If the longer interior route matters to you, plan around its 10 a.m. opening. Franciscan visitor information.
Choose the journey both ways before setting out: walking down from town creates a return climb. For October 2026, Busitalia's centenary page lists Line E serving San Damiano and the Eremo delle Carceri, with service shown through November 1. Recheck the current timetable and any extension for your date; arrange another transfer if needed. Operator information.
Lunch: make the move to the plain manageable
Keep a meal and rest between the sanctuary visits. Include any return to town for luggage when planning the transfer to Santa Maria degli Angeli.
The afternoon visitor-route reopening at 2:30 p.m. provides a useful pattern. If your departure is earlier, visit Santa Maria degli Angeli in the morning and move or omit San Damiano.
Afternoon: the Porziuncola
The Porziuncola is a small church within the larger basilica. Its Franciscan history connects it with the early fraternity and Clare's consecration; the wider route includes the Chapel of the Transitus. Begin with the Porziuncola and choose how much to add. Santa Maria degli Angeli in Porziuncola.
If leaving by train, confirm the journey to the station and leave time to collect stored bags. Choose a departure that lets this final visit keep its own pace.
Choose optional visits deliberately
Eremo delle Carceri
The hermitage on Mount Subasio is associated with Francis's retreat into prayer. Give it the place of another outing on day two, with a confirmed return transfer and an access check for the parts you hope to visit. Franciscan sanctuary account.
Saint Carlo Acutis
The Santuario della Spogliazione, in Santa Maria Maggiore, identifies the tomb of Saint Carlo Acutis as a hilltown pilgrimage stop. Its current arrangements suspend church and tomb visits on Sundays and holidays from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.; pilgrims attending the 11 a.m. Mass must enter by 10:30 a.m. Check temporary notices too. Sanctuary visitor arrangements.
Include either place because it belongs to your pilgrimage, taking time from another optional activity.
A gentler plan for hills, heat or rain
Assisi's different church levels need separate access decisions. The municipality describes an assisted lift route to Francis's tomb, arranged with the custodian. At Santa Chiara, it lists an alternative main-church entrance but a stair route to the tomb that is not wheelchair accessible. It describes accessible entry to Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Porziuncola. Confirm arrangements for your equipment and chosen route. Assisi for everyone.
For one day, keep one principal church, a proper meal and a second visit only if energy and transfers allow. Over two days, use transport to separate the hilltown from the plain. In uncomfortable weather, shorten outdoor movement and keep the prayer and rest.
Make days and nights fit together
For one full day: arrive Tuesday, visit the hilltown Wednesday, depart Thursday—two nights. For two full days: arrive Tuesday, visit the hilltown Wednesday, use Thursday for the selected outlying sanctuaries, depart Friday—three nights. These are editorial examples, with travel still to confirm.
If arriving and leaving on the same day, count the usable interval honestly. An arrival afternoon and departure morning are two partial days; shorten the plan to match.
Before setting out, save the chosen worship time, visitor openings and midday breaks, complete station transfers, lunch interval, luggage and access arrangements. Agree on one optional place you will omit if the day needs more room.
